Grackle problems occur during their spring migrations between March and April and their fall migrations between September and October or in areas where they regularly spend the winter. But in Ohio, grackles are everywhere during the summer months.
Grackle breeding takes place from March to July and they will lay four to five pale blue eggs marked with black which are quickly incubated in two weeks. Grackles will generally nest in evergreen trees but it is not uncommon for them to nest in an attic, vent, an opening in fascia, or any building that can be accessed 24/7.

Unlike starlings, grackles are native to the United States. Grackles have long legs and tail feathers with a glossy, lustrous body and glowing golden eyes. give grackles an intent expression. You can distinguish a grackle by its abrasive assortment of gruff, grating sounds, often ending in a metallic squeak.

Grackles will eat a wide variety of foods, including insects, seeds, grains, and even the eggs of other birds. If you have any of the food items easily available, you are opening up your property to grackle problems. Don’t use tray feeders or feeders with platforms that allow grackles to land.
If you are using bird feeders, use ones that keep the grackles from getting to the seed. Feeders surrounded by cages will work but let small birds enter but not grackles. You can also find feeders with an adjustable, weight-activated perch that closes when a grackle lands on it.
When all else fails for you, you know who to call! The Grackle Busters at Ohio Bird Control will have a solution to your grackle problems. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
